Loan Repayment Not Showing? What to Check in Singapore

You have made a loan repayment, but the document in front of you seems unchanged. Before concluding that the payment is missing, check whether you are comparing the same loan, transaction and reporting date.

This guide helps you prepare a clear enquiry about an existing account. It does not assume that either you or the lender has made an error.

Start with three checks

1. Check the payment status. Open your bank’s transaction record. Note whether the transfer is completed, pending, unsuccessful or reversed. Save the amount, date, recipient and reference. A scheduled payment instruction is not the same as a completed transfer.

2. Match the loan account. Compare your repayment instructions with the recipient details and reference used. If you have several loans, identify which account the payment was intended for. Ask the lender to trace it if the reference is unclear.

3. Check the document date. An older statement cannot confirm what happened after it was prepared. Ask for a receipt or updated account information covering the payment you are checking.

An illustrative example: two dates, one payment

Mei transfers S$280 on 24 September. She then opens a statement dated 23 September and cannot find that transfer.

The statement predates her payment, so its omission does not establish that the money is missing. Mei checks her bank record and asks the lender to confirm receipt and the loan account credited.

Suppose the subsequent receipt shows S$260 applied to principal and S$20 to interest. Those amounts total S$280, but principal falls by S$260. This hypothetical split is not an HHL rate or repayment arrangement. Check your own contract and records; our Singapore loan glossary explains the terms.

What should your enquiry include?

Send a concise request through a verified lender contact channel:

Please help trace my repayment of [amount] on [date], reference [reference], intended for loan [account]. Please confirm receipt, which account was credited, how the payment was allocated, and the balance date shown.

Attach relevant payment evidence and identify the statement entry you are questioning. Keep the original records and the reply. Avoid sharing unrelated transactions or passwords.

Official borrower checks

The Registry advises borrowers to obtain and check a receipt for each repayment, check their statements, and retain both as evidence. Its borrowing FAQs also explain how to report concerns with supporting documents.

Do not automatically send a duplicate payment because an old balance looks unchanged. Clarify promptly, while continuing to address upcoming contractual payments; an enquiry does not itself suspend repayment obligations.

Frequently asked questions

Is a transfer screenshot enough?

Keep it as supporting evidence, but obtain the lender’s receipt too. A transfer record alone may not explain the loan account or allocation recorded by the lender.

Should I wait until the next statement?

Raise an unclear or missing payment promptly. Ask for confirmation of the specific transaction rather than waiting with an unresolved question.

What if the explanation still does not match?

Request a written reconciliation identifying the disputed entry. If you wish to report the matter, follow the Registry’s official complaint guidance linked above and retain relevant evidence.
