Loan Calculator Estimates in Singapore: What to Check Before Relying on the Result

A loan calculator can help you explore repayment figures, but its result needs context. The amount shown depends on the information entered and the assumptions built into the tool. Before using that number to make a decision, check what it includes and how it compares with an actual repayment schedule.

This guide explains how to read a loan calculator estimate in Singapore and prepare useful questions for a licensed moneylender. It does not recommend a loan amount or quote an HHL interest rate.

What Does a Loan Calculator Estimate Tell You?

A typical calculator uses inputs such as the loan amount, interest rate and repayment period to produce an illustration. It can be useful for exploring a question such as how a different repayment period changes the displayed instalment.

However, a calculation is not an assessment of your application. HHL Credit’s website calculator describes its results as estimates and states that actual approval, repayments, fees and terms are subject to assessment.

Treat the output as a starting point for questions. A figure that appears on screen does not, by itself, confirm that the amount, rate or repayment period is available to you.

Check the Inputs Before Comparing Results

Write down the inputs beside the result so you can reproduce the calculation later. Check:

  • The amount entered and whether it matches the amount you intend to enquire about.
  • Whether the interest input is monthly or annual.
  • The repayment period and payment frequency.
  • Which costs the tool says are included or excluded.

A monthly rate and an annual rate are different inputs. If the tool does not make the period clear, ask before relying on the result. HHL Credit’s Singapore loan glossary introduces the main terms used in repayment discussions.

Ask What the Displayed Total Includes

Look for an explanation of the calculation, rather than assuming that a heading such as “total payment” covers every possible circumstance. Ask whether the illustration includes any permitted upfront fee and what assumptions it makes about paying on time.

The Registry of Moneylenders publishes rules on interest calculation and permitted fees. Its guidance explains that interest is calculated on outstanding principal after payments allocated to principal. Refer to questions 3 and 4 of the official borrowing FAQs when checking the explanation you receive.

Do not add a charge simply because a calculator has a field for it. Equally, do not assume a charge is absent because the tool does not display it. Ask for the actual breakdown and its basis.

A Simple Example of Comparing Estimates

Suppose two fictional illustrations show six payments of S$360 and eight payments of S$280. Their scheduled-payment totals are S$2,160 and S$2,240 respectively. The second has a smaller payment each time, but its displayed total is S$80 higher.

That arithmetic alone does not establish which option is suitable or even whether the illustrations are comparable. You would still need to check that they refer to the same amount borrowed, include the same cost categories and use clearly explained assumptions.

These figures are solely an illustration of comparing totals. They are not HHL quotations, available repayment plans or interest calculations.

Compare the Estimate with the Written Schedule

If you receive a proposed repayment schedule, place it beside the saved calculator result. Check the amount, rate, payment dates, number of instalments and cost breakdown. Highlight differences and ask for an explanation before signing.

The Registry states that loan terms must be explained in a language you understand and that you must receive a copy of the contract. See question 1 of its borrowing guidance. A saved calculator screenshot is useful context for a discussion, but it does not replace those documents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a calculator result mean my loan is approved?

No. An estimate is not an approval decision or confirmation of the terms available to you.

Why might the written schedule show a different figure?

Check whether the inputs, timing, cost inclusions or assessed terms differ. Ask the lender to explain the specific difference rather than guessing its cause.

Is the lowest displayed instalment always the lowest-cost option?

No. Compare the number of payments and their total, along with all applicable costs. The example above shows why a smaller instalment can still produce a larger scheduled total.

What should I save from a calculator session?

Keep the date, inputs, result and any assumptions or disclaimers displayed. This makes it easier to describe exactly what you were comparing.

Ask for an Explanation Before Deciding

For questions about an HHL estimate, visit HHL Credit Pte. Ltd.’s official website and identify the inputs you used. Any application remains subject to assessment; an online enquiry is not approval. Physical face-to-face verification at the approved business premises is required before a loan is granted.
