If you have money available to clear a loan ahead of schedule, start by finding out exactly what settling it would involve. The figure on an old statement, the sum of future instalments and the amount needed to close the account on a particular date may describe different things.
This guide outlines practical questions to ask about early repayment of a licensed moneylender loan in Singapore. It does not quote an HHL settlement amount or promise a particular saving.
What Do You Want the Payment to Achieve?
Be clear whether you want to settle the entire loan or make an additional payment towards it. These are different requests. For a partial payment, ask how the remaining balance and repayment schedule would be affected. For full settlement, ask what must happen for the account to be treated as fully paid.
Avoid sending an estimated amount and assuming that it completes the process. A short written enquiry can help both you and the lender identify the intended payment and the relevant account.
Ask for a Dated Settlement Breakdown
Request a written calculation for your proposed payment date. Useful questions include:
- What is the outstanding principal?
- What interest has been included, and for which period?
- Are there any other amounts included, and what is their basis?
- How long is the quoted figure valid?
- How should payment be made and identified against the account?
Ask for clarification if a heading is unfamiliar. HHL Credit’s Singapore loan glossary introduces principal, interest, tenure and fees, which can help you frame those questions.
Check the Applicable Rules, Not Just the Labels
The Registry of Moneylenders states that interest is calculated on the principal remaining after payments allocated to principal. It also identifies the permitted fees and expenses: a fee when the loan is granted, monthly late fees within the stated limits, and court-ordered costs for successful recovery claims. Read questions 3 and 4 of the official borrowing FAQs.
A charge does not become permissible simply because it appears in a quotation or contract. Ask the lender to explain any unfamiliar charge against the applicable rules. Do not assume bank-loan or housing-loan fee practices apply to a licensed moneylender loan.
Compare the Figures on the Same Basis
Use the latest repayment schedule and a settlement calculation covering the intended date. Check whether both figures include the same payments already made. Otherwise, you might count a payment twice or compare a current quotation with an outdated balance.
For illustration only, imagine that the remaining scheduled payments total S$1,800 and a written full-settlement quotation for a specified date is S$1,720. The difference is S$80, assuming both figures cover the same outstanding obligation and include all applicable amounts. This is a comparison exercise, not an HHL offer or a calculation of what any borrower will save.
If the payment date changes, ask whether the quotation needs updating rather than adjusting the number yourself.
Check What Remains in Your Budget
Write down the cash you would have left immediately after settlement. Then list essential bills due before your next income arrives. Include expenses already planned but not yet paid, such as an annual insurance bill or an agreed repair.
This helps you assess the practical effect of paying a lump sum today. Clearing an account and maintaining enough cash for ordinary commitments are both worth considering. Avoid basing the decision on an expected bonus or incoming payment that is still uncertain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the principal balance always the full settlement amount?
Do not assume so. Ask for the complete calculation for the proposed date, including an explanation of any interest or other amounts included.
Can I just add up the remaining instalments?
That gives you a scheduled-payment total. Ask the lender for the separate amount required for early settlement, then compare the two on a consistent basis.
Does an extra payment automatically close the loan?
Do not treat it as confirmation of closure. Explain your intention beforehand and ask for written confirmation of the account status after payment.
What documents should I keep afterwards?
Keep the quotation, payment evidence, receipt and confirmation together. The Registry advises obtaining and checking repayment receipts and retaining loan statements; see question 9 of its borrowing FAQs.
