Loan Repayment Receipts and Statements in Singapore: What to Keep

After making a loan repayment, it is easy to put the paperwork aside and carry on with the day. However, a clear set of records makes it easier to check what you have paid, understand an account entry and ask a specific question if something looks wrong.

This guide explains how to organise loan repayment receipts and statements in Singapore. It focuses on records after borrowing, rather than documents for a new application.

What Does the Registry of Moneylenders Advise?

The Registry advises borrowers to obtain a receipt for every repayment and check details such as the name, amount and date. Its guidance also says borrowers should receive statements of account for their loans at least once every January and July, check them and retain statements and receipts as evidence. See the official borrowing FAQs, question 9.

Use these checks as the foundation of your filing routine. The organisation suggestions below are practical tips, not additional legal requirements.

How Are a Receipt and a Statement Different?

A repayment receipt records an individual payment. A statement provides an account view covering a period. Read them together: one helps you locate the payment, while the other helps you follow how it appears in the account.

Keep your loan contract and repayment schedule alongside them. When a label is unfamiliar, HHL Credit’s Singapore loan glossary explains terms such as principal, interest and fees. Ask the lender to explain how the actual entries relate to your contract.

A Simple Filing Routine After Each Repayment

Choose a system you can maintain consistently. A paper folder, a private digital folder or both can work. For each payment:

  • Check the receipt while the transaction is still fresh in your mind.
  • File it under the correct loan and payment date.
  • Keep any bank transaction confirmation alongside it as supporting information.
  • Add a short note if you have asked about an entry and are waiting for an answer.

For digital copies, use an easily searchable filename such as 2026-09-19-repayment-receipt. If you have more than one loan, add a short private reference that distinguishes them. Avoid including a full identity number in the filename.

Photograph the entire receipt clearly, including its edges. Check that the image is readable before putting the original away. Keep originals and avoid editing the contents of supporting documents.

How to Review a Statement of Account

First, check which loan and period the statement covers. Then compare its payment entries with the receipts for that same period. A payment made after the statement’s closing date may belong in the next period, so check the dates before assuming an entry is missing.

If a description or figure is unclear, write down the exact entry and the question you want answered. For example: “Which payment does this entry relate to?” is easier to investigate than “My statement looks wrong.”

Keep a separate personal list of questions. Do not overwrite the statement or change a receipt to make the records match.

An Illustrative Payment-Checking Example

Suppose you have three receipts showing payments of S$300, S$300 and S$250 within a statement period. Together, they record S$850 paid.

When reviewing the statement, locate those three payments. If you cannot find one, check the dates and references, then ask the lender to reconcile it. Do not assume that S$850 paid means the principal fell by S$850: ask how payments were allocated under the contract.

These figures demonstrate record checking only. They are not an HHL repayment plan, interest calculation or loan quotation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a bank transfer screenshot the same as a repayment receipt?

Keep it as supporting evidence, but also obtain the lender’s repayment receipt. A screenshot alone may not explain how the payment was recorded against your loan.

What if I lose a receipt?

Ask the lender for a copy or written confirmation of the payment. Provide the date, amount and any transaction reference you still have. File the response with the other records.

Should I keep records after the final payment?

Keeping the completed set is a useful practical precaution. Ask for written confirmation of the account’s status and store it with the contract, statements and receipts. This article does not prescribe a statutory retention period.

Where can I raise a complaint about a licensed moneylender?

The Registry’s borrowing FAQs, question 10 explain its reporting process and the supporting evidence to provide.
