If you are self-employed, a private-hire driver, delivery rider, freelancer or platform worker, your income may not look the same as someone receiving a fixed monthly salary.
That does not automatically prevent you from applying for a personal loan. What matters is whether your income can be properly verified and whether the repayments are affordable.
What Documents May Be Required?
Depending on your situation, you may be asked to provide documents such as:
- NRIC or other valid identification
- Proof of residential address
- Recent bank statements
- Income tax records
- CPF contribution records
- Platform earnings statements
- Other documents showing your income
For platform workers, earnings statements from your platform operator may help show your recent income.
Providing documents does not guarantee that a loan will be approved.
How Much Can You Borrow?
Singapore has legal limits for unsecured borrowing from licensed moneylenders.
For Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents:
- Annual income below $10,000: up to $3,000
- Annual income from $10,000 to below $20,000: up to $3,000
- Annual income of $20,000 or more: up to 6 times monthly income
These are maximum legal limits and are not guaranteed loan amounts.
The actual amount offered may be lower depending on your financial situation, existing loans and ability to repay.
Interest and Fees
Licensed moneylenders in Singapore are subject to limits on interest and fees.
The maximum interest rate is 4% per month.
Permitted fees may include:
- Up to $60 for each month of late repayment
- An administrative fee of up to 10% of the principal when the loan is granted
- Court-ordered legal costs where applicable
Borrowers should always check the full repayment amount before signing a loan agreement.
Platform Workers Should Consider Variable Income
Income for private-hire drivers, delivery riders and other platform workers can change from month to month.
Before taking a loan, consider:
- Your average monthly income
- Vehicle, petrol and work expenses
- Household expenses
- Existing loan or credit-card repayments
- Whether you can still afford the instalment during a slower month
Do not base your repayment budget only on your best earning month.
Check Before You Borrow
Before signing any loan agreement:
- Verify that the moneylender is licensed with the Registry of Moneylenders
- Understand the interest rate and fees
- Check the repayment schedule
- Make sure the instalments are affordable
- Read the loan contract carefully
- Borrow only what you need and can reasonably repay
From 15 September 2026, qualifying unsecured loans from licensed moneylenders are also subject to a three-business-day cooling-off period under the applicable Ministry of Law requirements.
